Junior League of Long Island Builds Playground for Seaford School

The Hagedorn Little Village School Playground is the Third Community Project
Built by the Junior League on Long Island

Roslyn, N.Y. – November 10, 2009, The Junior League of Long Island (JLLI) completed its third signature Project Playground on Saturday, November 7, 2009, for The Hagedorn Little Village School (HLVS), Jack Joel Center for Special Children, in Seaford.  Over 80 volunteers from JLLI, HLVS and the community built the playground to provide a safe, appropriate area for approximately 145 young children with motor, balance and other atypical disabilities.

“The beautiful playground at The Hagedorn Little Village School is testament to what a community can accomplish when they have a common focus and a desire to make a difference.  While it only took one day of our time to construct this project, the playground will be enjoyed by hundreds of Long Island children for many years to come,” said Deidra Maleno, President of The Junior League of Long Island. “Project Playground would not have been possible without the generous donation of time and talent from our many volunteers as well as the support of our local sponsors, particularly Florence Building Materials and Raymond Michael Ltd., for donating equipment and supplies to the playground.”
JLLI’s Project Playground is implemented over a two-year period.  The first year is the planning phase focused on site location, community interaction and preparation.  The actual construction of the playground is completed by JLLI members, along with the local community, during the second year of the project.  The HLVS Playground is the Junior League’s third such project.  Previous JLLI Playgrounds have been built at the EOC/Head Start School in Manhasset and the Family Service League in Bayshore.
