The Junior League of Long Island Announces they are to Complete Their 9th Project Playground Initiative on Long Island in April 2023 https://www.jlli.org/the-junior-league-of-long-island-announces-they-are-to-complete-their-9th-project-playground-initiative-on-long-island-in-april-2023/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 16:16:45 +0000 https://www.jlli.org/?p=5367

Roslyn, New York (March 7, 2023) – The Junior League of Long Island (JLLI) in partnership with the Belmont Child Care Association, Inc. (BCCA) is pleased to announce that its Project Playground initiative will take place on Saturday, April 1 at the Belmont Childcare Association’s Anna House located in Elmont, NY. There are an anticipated 40 JLLI volunteers to help with installation of new playground equipment, painting fences and storage units, and tidying up the grounds.

The Belmont Child Care Association, Inc. (BCCA) was created to establish a child care center at Belmont Park which has the largest population of backstretch workers of the three New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) tracks. The crown jewel of the Belmont Child Care Association programs is Anna House, a full scale childcare and early childhood education facility located at Belmont Park.

“Belmont Child Care Association, Inc. (BCCA) is honored to have the Junior League of Long Island (JLLI) as a community partner as we work to change lives at the racetrack every day,” said BCCA’s Executive Director, Joanne K. Adams. “Our 2023 campaign, Be Transformative! Nourishing Mind – Nourishing Body – Nourishing Family, focuses on the importance of health and leading active lives. BCCA was thrilled to work with the JLLI on this much needed Playground Improvement Project and we are exceedingly grateful to them for their incredible generosity.”

The Project Playground initiative demonstrates what can be accomplished when there is a common focus to make a difference in the lives of children and families on Long Island. “We are proud to partner with BCCA to cultivate our signature project: Project Playground in conjunction with Anna House. This community partnership emphasizes the importance of safe spaces for children to learn and play. Playgrounds and early childhood play are the basis of imagination and teach our children the fundamentals of turning their creativity into reality,” said Cristine Bruno, current President of
The Junior League of Long Island.

The Junior League of Long Island Announces 2022 Signature Project Thanksgiving Baskets https://www.jlli.org/the-junior-league-of-long-island-announces-2022-signature-project-thanksgiving-baskets/ Wed, 02 Nov 2022 13:38:03 +0000 https://www.jlli.org/?p=5086 Roslyn, NY, November 2, 2022 – The Junior League of Long Island (JLLI) is proud to announce their Signature “Done in a Day” Project, Thanksgiving Baskets, taking place on Saturday, November 19th, 2022.  The “Done in a Day” (DIAD) program provides JLLI members with an opportunity to have an immediate impact within the local community as most projects are completed in one day.

Food insecurity on Long Island is a growing concern as more than 250,000 Long Islanders are food insecure with 79,000 of that number estimated to be children. Of the population of food insecure people in Nassau County 34% and 41% in Suffolk County are ineligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It is due to this that more than 63,000 Long Islanders do not have enough support to put food on the table.

Each year JLLI members gather to put together food baskets for families to host Thanksgiving dinner. Through our community partnerships, we have expanded our efforts to help 150 families in need across Long Island.

In addition to receiving food and monetary donations at our Junior League Thrift Shop, located in the village of Roslyn, we have devoted the roundup of our thrift shop sales to support our Thanksgiving Baskets Project. Donations can be shipped or dropped off at our Thrift Shop during Store Hours up until November 12th. For more information on this project and what donations are needed – please visit www.jlli.org/thanksgiving-baskets-2022.

“We have increased our allocation from 120 baskets to 150 baskets because we recognize the need in the community and want to be there to help.” Elizabeth McCune, Done in a Day –Chair

“Food insecurity on Long Island is at an all-time high, no one should have to be forced to make decisions whether to provide a meal for their family or use funds for food to keep a roof over their head.  The Junior League of Long Island recognizes the issues facing our communities and is working to provide underserved families across Nassau & Suffolk counties with a meal this Thanksgiving.  We thank our community partners and supporters who help us in our endeavor. “Cristine Bruno, JLLI President

The Junior League’s mission is to promote voluntarism, develop and train volunteers and improve our local communities. Through the fundraising efforts off our League, we can accomplish all three initiatives. We strongly believe the work we do is essential to improve our communities.
